British coins unearthed in Australia

Construction workers discovered the British sovereigns while digging in the port city of Albany, on Australia’s south west coast.

Between 300 and 400 are said to have been found.

A spokesman for West Australia police told the Associated Press that the coins dated from 1800, nearly 30 years before Albany was colonised, making their presence something of a puzzle.
