JOIN THE QUEST TO KEEP VIKING HOARD IN BARROW
THE Evening Mail has sharpened its battle axe to launch a campaign in conjunction with the Dock Museum, so Viking treasure found in Furness can stay in the borough forever.
The “Treasure Quest” campaign begins today, to coincide with the precious booty’s inaugural public exhibition at the Dock Museum from 11am.
The stash of 92 coins and other assorted artifacts – including ingots and a near-complete silver bracelet – was discovered by a local metal detectorist in May last year.
An independent committee valued the find at £49,500.
A £19,000 pledge from the Furness Maritime Trust has reduced the shortfall needed to secure the haul to £30,500.
If the money cannot be raised within four months, the treasure will be offered to other museums or even auctioned off into private hands.
Dock Museum curator, Sabine Skae, said: “I am delighted that the Evening Mail is supporting the campaign to keep the only Viking hoard found in Furness in Barrow.
“The Furness Hoard was found locally and it should be on display locally too.
